See What Is Possible

Building A Real Team

It's fresh, new, exciting. Most people can naturally feel energized at the beginning of a new year.  As leaders, our responsibilities are to create an environment in which we can make our plans come alive on an ongoing basis. The more immersed that we all are in that journey, the more likely that we will succeed… Simple.

I am so excited when I meet a new client. The very process of learning about their hopes and goals thrills me. Some asked if I missed leading a large team myself, and I had to stop and think about it. I loved the years that I spent working with my teams. I am proud of the work we did together. We created some fantastic programs and had an impact on thousands of clients. Yet, I never in all that time did not have one-on-one clients I coached, and the truth be told, I am a leader who loves coaching teams. I lead through coaching, as many good leaders do.

Nothing gives me greater joy than helping someone see what is possible, that what looks like a wall has a door, and what looks like a mistake is actually an opportunity for success. There is so much in our lives that tells us no, and you're just not enough, your built wrong, or you did it wrong, or you should have gone a different way. I see it so completely the opposite, and we are so much more than our worst days and so much more than most people allow. We can learn how to partner with others in ways that tap into the best of each of us, blending our gifts and talents into teams and companies that will change the future for us all. We could stop worrying about who is "right" or "getting." credit and listen to the fact that two ideas can both be good, heck four concepts can be good, and picking one doesn't mean anyone loses. It means we have an abundance of talent and a wealth of things to consider in other plans and projects.

We must believe that when one wins, we all win, and if one loses, we all lose. Real teams play together, not keeping score as if a goal is awarded to only one person, not the team. Helping peers should be seen as the highest form of teamwork, not just being a "superstar" achiever who delivers alone.

See, I started to think about how much I love coaching, but I still end up coaching.

UPHEAVAL

With all the upheaval in the marketplace, it is easy to pull in and think you need to protect yourself. Now is the most critical time for leaders to build interdependent solid teams. Teams who go through storms and trials are the strongest team you will ever lead. Lean into all the help you can get your leaders, peers, team, and coaching where available. An objective outside perspective, like a coach, can be vital. Helping your team see the value in each other and not pull away into silos is not the answer today.
